April 1971

Played one day this month at the Worcester Polytech, Alden Memorial Auditorium (Thanks to Robert Rand for this info) April 1971. The J. Geils Band came back to play at Worcester Polytech, Alden Memorial Auditorium. I was there and I was on the Social Committee.  I was running a small coffee house, weekend night spot, under the Sanford Riley Hall dormitory, “Friday the 13th”, which was next to the auditorium. I hooked up with Al Couchon, former member (2nd guitar) of the J. Geils Blues Band, and we became best buds. Al said…”get J. Geils”, so I approached the Social Committee for funds, but they had already spent their entire budget for the year and came up short. I still had money in the coffee house budget. We were making a profit all year so we still had our funds. So, I transferred bucks back to the main fund and we got the band to come to Worcester Tech. For the record, it was one of the best performances of the J. Geils Blues Band ever. They tore the house down with three standing ovations. Magic Dick did the best “Whammer Jammer” ever heard at any time. After the performance, we went back stage and J. gave Al Couchon his old Martin acoustic guitar. Al and I both remained on to graduation. The next time I saw J. was in Austin Texas in 1997 at Anton’s. They were touring in a nice class C camper. They were back playing the blues again, J. and Magic Dick, as Bluestime. They were a great Rock Band but Rock was never where their hearts were at, but it sure paid well. Once you’ve played the blues, you never get the monkey off your back. I know, I’ve been playing blues my whole life.

For the record. Robert Rand, WPI, Class of ’72 (bluesboyrand@yahoo.com)

The Capt. was booed offstage after one or two songs by the Geils fans” I was there. It was Billy Joel who was almost booed off the stage. The only thing that prevented it was his imitation of Joe Cocker. Joel was just about an unknown at that time. Beefheart did a full set. Like me, there were many there to see him and we gave him a lot of support. He did a GREAT show. There were some boos from J. Geils fans, but they had no impact.
